The new link road is expected to take a number of years before it is completed
Mottram Bypass was given the final sign off last year - having first been mooted 60 years ago. The A57 link road scheme, estimated to be worth around £228m, is designed to tackle congestion between Manchester and Sheffield.
That challenge was rejected by the Court of Appeal in 2024, meaning work to enable construction got the green light. An official start date for the works on the bypass has not been confirmed yet, but it is expected to be soon. Although contractors haven’t started work on the new road just yet, preparatory works are already underway. The compound that will act as the base of operations for the scheme is currently being built.

Manchester Kitchen Firms Shut Down After Taking Deposits for Undelivered WorkThree linked kitchen design and fitting companies in Manchester have been closed down following an investigation by the Insolvency Service. Smart Choice Kitchens Limited, Empire Kitchens and Bathrooms Limited, and Connect Kitchens Limited were found to have taken upfront payments from over 20 customers for kitchens that were never delivered. The companies allegedly encouraged customers to make payments before the kitchens were installed and then failed to provide the goods, leaving customers without refunds. The Insolvency Service also expressed concern that Connect Kitchens was acting as a 'phoenix company' - a company deliberately declared insolvent to avoid paying debts before restarting under a new name - potentially putting further consumers at risk.
