A 50-year-old man has been spared jail after using his company fuel card to fund his expensive drug habit. David Stephenson, from Rochdale, used the card 125 times in a month to buy nearly £7836.90 worth of petrol.

But instead of filling up company vehicles, he filled up cars used by his drug dealers in exchange for their illicit deliveries, a court was told. Stephenson quickly came clean after being questioned by his bosses, admitting he had been battling with a ‘pernicious drug habit’, and was sacked. The 50-year-old, who also suffered from physical and mental health issues, then ‘turned back to drugs, which had been a feature of his youth’ and his habit quickly spiralled out of control, said Beth Caunce, defending.
