Examples in other countries have seen employers fined for contacting their staff outside of agreed hours
Employees could be given thousands of pounds by their bosses if a new law comes into force. The new Labour government has committed to ‘a right to switch off’ law. Based on other examples in Ireland and Belgium, the policy is centred around the idea that workers' work and home lives should be kept separate. It sets expectations of when staff can be contacted outside of normal working hours.
They said: “This is an ongoing discussion, we’ve not settled on a position yet, it has to be specific to each workplace and therefore it has to be something that businesses and their workforce agree among themselves rather than a diktat — and we’re conscious of the disproportionate impacts of these sort of policies on smaller businesses, that will factor in to how we draft it.
