Law firm fighting for tradespeople with silicosis demands tougher regulation

Leigh Day is representing a growing number of tradespeople who have contracted silicosis from manufacturing engineered stone or quartz worktops, after breathing in toxic silica dust.

Ewan Tant, a partner at Leigh Day, said: “Leigh Day is seeing a growing number of stone workers who have developed silicosis after being exposed to silica dust whilst cutting engineered stone to make quartz kitchen worktops. “Our fear is that we may be about to experience a significant increase in silicosis cases amongst engineered stone workers that will only get worse unless these measures are urgently introduced.”

With worktops often manufactured by small companies, it was harder for HSE to enforce health and safety standards, the law firm says.Better awareness of the dangers of engineered stone; improved protection for people working with it; and better regulation of the use of the material, is also needed, the law firm’s industrial disease team says.
