The old age tradition draws many to the town in Bury

This weekend sees the return of the weird, wacky but fun World Black Pudding Throwing Championships in Bury . An annual event, the competition sees hopefuls flock to Ramsbottom and try their best at hurling black puddings at a pile of Yorkshire puddings to see how many they can knock down.

Everyone is invited to compete with there being a seniors leader board and junior leader board for the little ones. READ MORE: First look inside the Vietnamese restaurant featuring a jukebox, disco balls and meals in under three minutes To enter, punters are asked to pay £2 for three black puddings and were allowed as many tries as possible. A popular event, many contestants travel from all over Greater Manchester and beyond to give it a go.

It is said that the competition is a tradition that dates back to the War of Roses, when warring factions of the House of Lancaster and House of York would throw food at each other after using up all their ammunition. The custom was revived in 1839, and later in the 1980s by the Stubbins Community Trust and it has been a summertime staple in the town ever since. The competition will take place outside The Oaks pub on Bridge Street from 11am to 4pm.
