There were 184,775 fewer children's non-fiction books on library shelves in 2018 compared with the previous year, according to the House of Commons Library
Just 26 per cent are reading daily outside the classroom compared with 43 per cent in 2015, a study for the National Literacy Trust found. The majority of boys and more than half of girls said they preferred screen time to reading, a survey of 27,000 youngsters aged eight to 18 revealed. The figures come after the Daily Express revealed children's books are vanishing from shelves amid drastic library cutbacks.
