A cancer treatment drug first developed in Melbourne more than a decade ago is offering new hope for people suffering from epilepsy as clinical trials begin.

The drug, known as sodium selenate, was developed more than a decade ago by researchers at the University of Melbourne, but human trials for epileptic patients will only begin in October following years of study.

There are more than 150,000 epilepsy sufferers in Australia, with over a third of those affected unable to reliably manage their condition with available anti-seizure medications. Monash University Professor Terry O'Brien has been researching sodium selenate since 2012 and is hopeful it will be a success in human trials. Picture: Epilepsy Foundation of Australia via Facebook

Those findings were supported by the experiment that forms the basis of the upcoming human trial - which went one step further and tested the effect of the drug on rats who already had epilepsy, including some who were also resistant to existing treatments.
