U.S.-based ThinkOrbital has conducted experiments to demonstrate the world’s first autonomous in-space welding system.
The main tool is a robotic arm that will do autonomous welding and be designed with interchangeable end effectors. The autonomous robotic assembly and welding system is also equipped with X-ray cameras. technology, which uses high-speed electron beams to melt and fuse metals. EBW is ideal for space settings, especially those with intense vibrations, abrupt temperature changes, weightlessness, and more.
Interestingly, this innovative system could lead to the direct development of large space station modules, domes for lunar habitats, and other structures.
