Saudi Arabia trialed its first air taxi for Hajj pilgrims using EHang's EH216-S eVTOL, aiming for approval to start commercial operations.
EHang’s two-seat autonomous aircraft transported pilgrims in Mecca, in an effort to gain Saudi market approval for its eVTOL.The tests, conducted using a Chinese firm EHang’s EH216-S pilotless electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, are claimed to be the ‘world’s first air taxi to be licensed by a civil aviation authority’.
In May, Ehang carried out a similar demonstration in Abu Dhabi. In addition to EH216-S, the EH216-F and EH216-L demonstrated their debut flights during the trial run. According to Saudi officials, the trials carried out in a low-risk region of protected airspace are essential to assisting authorities in establishing the proper legislative framework to deploy pilotless eVTOL aircraft.
