Wheeler’s friends in Brazil put a part of human DNA that makes proinsulin, the precursor to insulin, into the cells of 10 cow embryos. These embryos were then placed into the wombs of regular cows. Only one calf with the new gene was born.
“In the old days, we used to just slam DNA in and hope it got expressed where you wanted it to,” Wheeler said. “We can be much more strategic and targeted these days.
