Destination Skatepark is the world's largest 3D printed skate sculpture, showcasing sustainable, innovative construction with local materials.
QOROX and its partners set an example for urban developers by combining 3D-printing technology with locally sourced materials and an innovative design. The city of Tauranga, New Zealand, recently took the wraps off “Destination Skatepark.” This state-of-the-art skatepark demonstrates the intersection of skateboarding and construction technology.
Spearheaded by concrete 3D printing company QOROX, the project is a milestone in the application of additive manufacturing to public spaces. “There are only a handful of 3D-printed skateparks worldwide, and none match the scale, variety, and intricate designs of our new recreational space,” said Peter Fraser, the council’s design lead.
QOROX leveraged CyBe RC , a mobile 3D concrete printer with an ABB robotic arm mounted on a tracked vehicle, to bring the project to fruition. This setup is maneuverable and allows substantial structures to be printed on-site, irrespective of terrain.Destination Skatepark is also noteworthy for its community-centric approach to design. Local skaters and community members played key roles in shaping the park’s layout and features.
