Lori and George Schappell passed at a hospital in Pennsylvania on Sunday, according to their obituaries published by Leibensperger Funeral Homes. They died of undisclosed causes at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. The siblings’ skulls were partially fused and they shared 30% of their brains.

They were also the world’s first same-sex conjoined twins to identify as different genders, as George announced he was transgender in 2007 and began presenting himself as a man. Lori and George were born in Pennsylvania on September 18, 1961. While Lori was able-bodied, George could not walk due to a spina bifida, so he used a wheelchair that Lori pushed for them to get around.
