Chinese researchers have created a 4-gram solar-powered drone with high efficiency for continuous daytime flight and remote monitoring.

The drone’s high lift efficiency and light power use enable continuous solar-powered flight in natural sunlight. The device, called ColumbFly, weighs just 4 grams and uses a solar cell to generate electricity, creating an electric field between oppositely charged plates arranged in a circle.

The team at Beihang University in Beijing claims that each component has been designed to balance efficiency and lightweight, and such a design can enable remote monitoring tasks for long periods of time.Limited flight duration is a major challenge for the widespread use of micro aerial vehicles , especially those weighing less than 10 grams. These vehicles typically have a flight time of no more than 10 minutes.power is a potential solution to improve the endurance of these ultralight MAVs.

To tackle these challenges, the team devised a drone with a sizable motor featuring an inner ring of stationary charged plates crafted from thin carbon-fiber plates with an aluminum foil coating. Adjacent stator plates carry opposing charges, surrounded by a ring of 64 rotating plates, as reported by

While this may seem modest, the team is optimistic that design improvements will enhance its endurance and payload capacity over time.
