Royal Navy serviceman Eric Bateman was on the warship HMS Erebus for the D-Day landings on Utah beach, and paid tribute to his friends who were lost in the war.

Robert Persichitti died while travelling to a D-Day commemoration event A World War II veteran has tragically died just hours before attending an event to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day. Robert ‘Al’ Persichitti, aged 102, was travelling with a group of other veterans to attend a ceremony in France when he passed away. He fell ill while travelling by ship in the North Sea and although he was rushed to hospital in Germany by helicopter, he died shortly after.
