John Nichol, the former RAF navigator who was himself taken prisoner during the first Gulf War, described Cdr Clark as a "giant of our nation" as he paid tribute on Tuesday."Shot down in 1944, 3 of his crew perished & he ended up in Stalag Luft 3 just before The Great Escape."Blue skies Sir. RIP"The Germans considered the purpose-built Stalag Luft 3 camp near the Polish town of Zagan as practically escape-proof.

RAF Cosford in Shropshire also paid tribute to Cdr Clarke, who visited the training station in 2018 with fellow POWs. Based in the then-German province of Lower Silesia near the town of Sagan, now Zagan, Poland, the Germans considered it as practically escape-proof.
