Wycombe Wanderers can reclaim the top spot in the EFL table with a draw or win against Charlton Athletic on Boxing Day.
Wycombe may have been knocked off top spot in the final EFL game before Christmas but they can go back to the summit, for at least a few hours, if they can avoid defeat at mid-table Charlton this lunchtime. The Addicks are in a throng of 11 clubs separated by only eight points, ranked 6th to 16th in the table, but have won their past two games, though it doesn’t hold a candle to the Chairboys’ current 19-match unbeaten streak dating back to the halcyon days of August.
To say Charlton tend to suffer from a Boxing Day hangover would be an understatement. They have failed to win their final game of a calendar year for a staggering 17 straight years – picking up only eight points in total. Their most recent late-December win actually came in the Premier League, beating Aston Villa 2-1 in 2006. Despite Wanderers recent form, they don’t have a great record against Charlton of late, losing four of their past six visits, including 3-1 last season, taking four points in total and conceding three goals in half of them. Feels like a big game, this, a win for either side would surely enhance their credentials in their own particular race, be that play-off or promotion, while a defeat would deflate that particular balloon pretty quickly
