I write about esports, competitive games and the creator economy. I’ve been covering esports for over 10 years writing for many top publications and have provided consultancy services for some international brands entering the industry.
launched and while the major talking point was yet another online game having massive server issues, there is one intentional decision the game has made that seems to make no sense; there’s no skill-based matchmaking in unranked modes.has listened to his dissatisfaction. In casual playlists, there is no skill-based matchmaking, with lobbies being made up of all skill levels, which should lead to quick queue times.
In simple terms, skill-based matchmaking puts you in matches with players who have a similar skill level to you. The idea is that it will lead to closer games that aren’t dominated by one or two top players and will make the game more fun for everyone. Most of the time this works out, as multiplayer games in the last 15 years have become way more fun at a competitive level than the days when you had to join a random server on a server browser and hope you wouldn’t be outgunned.
However, some players, especially content creators who play specific games a lot, have complained that skill-based matchmaking leads to high queue times at the top level due to how few players can match their ability. This is about the only real issue you can have against skill-based matchmaking, with other complaints such as forced 50% win rates being disproved in many games.
Given it impacts so few players it seems strange to make everyone else's experience worse to appease the top level, but with the reach these top players now have, it's easy to mobilize an army against an issue that really doesn’t impact them.has also made a point of consulting with many top players, especially from the Call of Duty scene, throughout its development and this seems like a decision to please them, rather than the average player.
Could they have just had a good game? Sure, it happens, but with no skill-based matchmaking there’s also a chance they are just considerably better than me and we should never have been matched together. I’m sure they had fun, but for me, it was tedious just being trapped basically in your spawn location by players who only seemed to hit your head.matchmaking plays out over the coming weeks because I suspect as player numbers drop the quality of the unranked matches will as well.
