Anthony Volpe has not hit a home run since May 16.

’ Anthony Volpe played like he was living up to his former top-prospect potential for the first two months of this season.

Volpe was hitting at career-best marks with a 34-game on-base streak, and New York had the best record in the league. Now at the All-Star break, Volpe has fallen from batting leadoff to seventh in the order, and manager Aaron“He’s still working and going through some of those growing pains to get there,” Boone said. “So, yeah, it’s a tough game. ... Hopefully, in the second half, some of the things he’s working on start clicking more and you see a more closer to completed hitter and product.

Since June 6, Volpe is batting .171/.203/.230 with a 22 wRC+, and he dropped his season OPS from .803 to .666. Strikeouts have become an issue, and he has not hit a home run since May 16. In the same stretch, the Yankees have gone 13-21 — falling to second in the division at the break. Before the cold-stretch, Volpe held a 130 wRC+, which was third on the Yankees behind Aaron Judge and Juan Soto, and up from an 84 he posted in his rookie season last year., and he won a the shortstop Gold Glove in the American League his first year. Fans hoped a big rise for Volpe, like other former top shortstop prospects had seen their second year such as Bobby Witt Jr. and Gunnar Henderson — who both finished their second seasons top-10 in MVP voting.

“I think he will develop into being an above average offensive player,” Boone said. “I just think he’s going through that process of being a 22-year-old, young player in the league that has flashed offensive talent. I think going through what he went through last year, having some real good moments and doing some real good things, but also have some real struggles.
