Yankees GM Brian Cashman met with reporters on Tuesday in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman did a lot of venting Tuesday during his hour-long media session on day one of the GM Meetings., which are being held this week in Scottsdale, Ariz.— Dressed in a pink shirt, gray khakis and dark sunglasses on an 88-degree fall day in the Arizona dessert, Brian Cashman smiled making his way through a courtyard outside the luxurious Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia.
Cashman went on and on defending why he traded for Gallo, at one point even mentioning that .200-hitting second baseman Rougned Odor told him in the summer of 2021 that the strikeout machine would be a great fit and have no problem playing in New York. Cashman added that he’s been called “dumb” by Yankees fans and media for giving the Rangers four ranked prospects for Gallo, but two playoff teams have added the slugger since he left New York, the Dodgers late in 2022 and the Twins this year.
“Obviously, a lot of injuries took guys offline and then we had underperformance in certain areas, too. That’s what added up to our 82-win season more so than anything else, but there’s a lot of narratives that got carried away in my opinion and a lot of people that have been unfairly portrayed in my opinion.”
Cashman’s pressers usually are entertaining. He usually sprinkles in one-liners and has a good time. This one was so different that one veteran reporter predicted it’ll be talked about by Yankees reporters for years and years. Cashman sounded a little like The Boss on this day. This wasn’t quite George Steinbrenner-esque, but Cashman’s spirited back-and-forth with New York Post baseball columnist Joel Sherman was epic.
The Yankees, by the way, might not make any big organizational changes this offseason. The media speculation has been that there would be revisions to the analytics department, making even firings, after Judge called for change during late-season interviews and then had multiple one-on-one sit-downs with Steinbrenner.“I asked him about that and he talked about RBIs and batting average,” Cashman said. “They’re important. I understand.
Regardless of what may or may not be tweaked in a year, Cashman insists the Yankees still are using their baseball people to assist in roster and in-game decisions as much as their analytics staff. Perhaps, but why would current Yankees employees insist it’s accurate as well as scouts for other clubs who are assigned to following Cashman’s entire organization very closely, majors and minors?
