At 3 a.m. Pacific Time on Dec. 7, Steinbrenner phoned Judge from the side of a freeway in Italy, where he was vacationing during the Winter Meetings. Before Steinbrenner jumped on the phone, the Giants andwere both willing to give Judge, at minimum, a nine-year contract. The Yankees were holding at eight. Judge said he was ready to go elsewhere if the Yankees did not offer a ninth year. But once Judge articulated that to Steinbrenner, he was extended a ninth year.
On Wednesday, one final surprise awaited Judge in Steinbrenner’s suite at Yankee Stadium, where he officially signed his contract. Jeter was in attendance to pass the torch of the captaincy to Judge. The gesture was fitting. Judge said he spoke with Jeter a couple of times throughout his free agency process to seek advice.
Judge’s work ethic has never been in question. It showed up again as he closed in on his record-breaking home run.
