Yankees right-hander Clarke Schmidt was having a breakout season until being shut down this week with an injury to his pitching arm.
pitcher Clarke Schmidt didn’t think much of the red flag that appeared out of nowhere Sunday in San Diego while he was running up his pitch count allowing two runs, one earned, over five innings in a loss to the Padres.
Schmidt and the Yankees had Monday off, then concern set in on Tuesday at Angel Stadium when he still didn’t feel right playing catch. The results weren’t good. Schmidt was put on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a lat strain that probably will sideline him at least until the middle of August or early September.
Schmidt, who traveled up I-5 on Thursday to get a second opinion in Los Angeles from famed baseball arm specialist Dr. Neal ElAttrache, was unavailable for comment. Reliever Cody Morris was called up from Triple-A on Thursday for what figures to be two days on the roster as a bullpen option. “He can pitch,” Boone said. “Really good changeup. Obviously a really strong outing for us against Cleveland when he did come up. We were excited to get him this winter. He’s another guy coming off an injury. He missed most of last year and a little bit the year before, so he’s a guy that you know we value and felt could help us.
