Former Angels outfielder Brett Phillips is in the process of transitioning to a relief pitcher. The intention of switching positions is to get Phillips back to the Major Leagues. He has pitched 5.1 innings in MLB, but his results were unpromising.
It’s not uncommon for baseball players to switch between different positions on the field, but when it comes to pitchers and position players, they don't tend to swap roles.
Reporter Marc Topkin delved into the background behind Phillips’ position change: the Florida native has bounced around a handful of Triple-A teams as an outfielder without establishing himself anywhere at the big league level. Phillips signed a minor league contract with the White Sox in January but was released in May. Since his departure, Phillips has been working with pitching coach Sean Gallagher, who played four MLB seasons.Transitioning into a pitcher, specifically a reliever, is how Phillips plans to make his way back to the Major Leagues.
