As American television’s most popular series in recent memory – the season five premiere in 2022 pulled in an astonishing 15.7 million viewers – the stage was set for showrunner Taylor Sheridan’s modern cowboy fairytale to build to a great crescendo.
For those unfamiliar with the “neo-Western” behemoth, the series follows the ups and downs of ranch life in modern day Montana, presided over by Kevin Costner’s rugged, imposing patriarch Dutton. Despite sniffy reviews by critics, who dismissed it as a “red state” series, clearly there is something in its old-fashioned storytelling and its romanticising of traditional values – faith, family, the American Dream – that appeals to viewers. Millions of them.
So, why is Costner MIA for the denouement of the drama that resurrected his career? How did one of the biggest shows in the world end with such disappointment? What on Earth happened?
