New statistics reveal that treasure finds in Yorkshire and the Humber increased to 108 in 2023, marking the second highest number in England and Wales since 1996, with emphasis on responsible treasure hunting practices.
A total of 108 treasure finds were reported in 2023, a slight increase from 107 the previous year. It comes as Preliminary data from the Department for Culture , Media and Sport indicates that 1,358 treasure finds were reported in England and Wales in 2023.
Treasure finds in Yorkshire 2023 Across the country, the East of England had the highest number of treasure discoveries reported last year, with 304 finds representing 22 per cent of total discoveries. He said: "At the DIF, we view the high number of treasures found last year with a focus on conservation as each find can represent a piece of history that needs careful handling to preserve its archaeological context and integrity.
The criteria for defining treasure underwent a significant change in July last year. Before the update, artefacts unearthed and deemed as treasure by the coroner were required to be over 300 years old, crafted from precious metal, or part of a hoard of valuable items.
