1977 - Det Con Norman Garnham It was an act of kindness that killed North Yorkshire Police acting Det Con Norman Garnham. DC Garnham was driving home from work when he stopped to pick up teenage hitchhiker Colin Simpson. 1982 - PC David Haigh PC Haigh of NYP was shot dead by triple murderer Barry Prudom. The dad-of-three, 29, was sent to arrest a 'petty criminal' sleeping rough in woods near Beckwithshaw, Harrogate, on June 17, 1982.
Following one of the biggest manhunts in North Yorkshire Police's history, Prudom, 37, was found in Malton on July 4. Following a siege, Prudom, of Leeds, shot himself dead.1984 - Det Sgt John Speed DS John Speed came to the rescue of his colleague PC John Thorpe who had been shot at during a routine stop and check on Kirkgate, Leeds. Two men in a vehicle had been spotted acting suspiciously near Leeds Parish Church.
His NYP patrol partner PC Sandy Kelly was shot four times but survived. Magee was jailed for life in March 1993 for Mr Goodman's murder but was later released in 2000 as part of the Good Friday Agreement.2003 - PC Ian Broadhurst PC Ian Broadhurst was shot dead by ex-US Marine David Bieber on Dib Lane, Leeds, on Boxing Day 2003. Bodybuilder Bieber was wanted in the US for the murder of his love rival Marcus Mueller in Fort Myers, Florida in 1995.
