Here's what we thought
Squinting over at the elderly few, laid back in the sun, their wrinkled skin baking in the sunshine, I couldn’t help but question how they could relax surrounded by a sea of drunken youths, with the din of boomboxes blaring, bottles and cans being popped and clinked across the small pebbly beach.
Groups of intoxicated teenage boys were recklessly taking turns to swoop off the suspension bridge, clumsily manoeuvring between the metal grates. With unsteady hands, they clung on with wavering strength before clumsily somersaulting into the air. Their landings accompanied by a thunderous splash, as they crashed haphazardly into the murky depths of the dark brown riverbed.Meanwhile, inebriated teenage girls lounged on the riverbank, lazily sipping their mixers.
It was troubling to watch the boys jumping from the bridge into the shallow river, however there was an air of nostalgia and jubilation across the riverbank as the young and care-free revelled in the glorious British summer. Perhaps this is why there were a few older folk, sitting and lying amidst the young rabble. Eager to recapture the spirit of childlike joy, finding solace in the youthful chaos - which in the present must feel but a distant memory.
