The Yorkshire Vet star Peter Wright made a candid admission during a one-off special this week
The Yorkshire Vet star Peter Wright has candidly opened up about his career. The 69-year-old has been a cherished fixture on Channel 5 's The Yorkshire Vet since the programme launched in 2015.
The beloved series notably follows Peter and fellow veterinarian Julian Norton as they attend to animals in need at their practices in North Yorkshire. The documentary returned to screens for a special episode this week , which centred around the night shift staff at Huddersfield vets. Peter doesn't work night shifts anymore, so wasn't heavily featured, but he did make a brief appearance at the start of the episode.
After handing over to the night shift team at Grace Lane Vets in Kirkbymoorside, Peter shared: "I must admit, night work is something I used to enjoy, because, you know, people don't call you out late at night or during the night, unless they have an emergency.
"So, it was always going to be something that would test you. And I think I'm beyond those days now really. It's always better left to the younger ones. They far more energy than I have these days.
So, on that note, I think I'm going home for my tea.
" This admission comes after Peter notably chose to depart from Skeldale Veterinary Centre in Thirsk in 2021. Peter had worked on the site for 40 years before relocating to Grace Lane Vets, with one key reason leading to his departure. He previously told the Express that the move was prompted by Skeldale's acquisition by Medivet.
Peter had begun his career at the Yorkshire practice as a junior before becoming a partner, but circumstances shifted for him following the company takeover, which meant he could no longer pursue the work he was passionate about.
"To take the farm side away from me, you know, it had to stop because it wasn't economically viable anymore and I couldn't do that work anymore," Peter said, adding: "Skeldale was the love of my life, but it became uneconomical to continue doing farm work. " Elsewhere on The Yorkshire Vet: Night Shift, a spaniel was rushed in with a serious injury after a freak accident on a woodland walk, as well as an angry fighting cat that had been injured during a late-night scrap.
Meanwhile, Julian helped a team of volunteers in Thirsk to protect a group of ducks, who, every night, make the journey from the riverbank to the busy town centre. That's not all, as farm vet David Melleney was also urgently called out to a difficult lambing. David successfully welcomed a healthy lamb into the world, but sadly, the other newborn didn't make it after a breech birth.
Opening up about the gruelling nature of night shifts, the vet went on to share: "You never really get used to it. You do adapt, but getting called out of the house or out of bed is a big tax on your lifestyle and your sleep. But emergencies can happen at any time. Farming's a 24/7 gig and so is being a vet, I'm afraid.
" The Yorkshire Vet and The Yorkshire Vet: Night Shift are both available to stream on Channel 5
