Anyone breaking the rules could be fined up to £1,000
The first hosepipe ban in Yorkshire in 27 years comes into force today - Friday, August 26 - with five million people affected.
Yorkshire Water, which services West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, the East Riding of Yorkshire, part of North Lincolnshire, most of North Yorkshire and part of Derbyshire, has introduced a Temporary Use Ban to reduce water usage across the region. The company said that despite some rain in recent weeks, reservoir levels are still low.
At the start of August, they were around 50 per cent full, which is over 20 per cent lower than usual for this time of year. The hosepipe ban will be in place indefinitely and until there is significant rainfall to fill up reservoirs. It is hoped the measures will help avoid the need for water rationing. Anyone breaking the rules could face a fine of up to £1,000.Customers can still carry out these activities if they use water from a bucket or watering can; or use water that is not sourced from the mains such as grey water, rainwater from a water butt through a hosepipe, or private boreholes for example.
