Yorkshire Water sparks fury after gas flood left family with no heating for five days 🗣️ 'It’s not acceptable when they are at fault. They’ve caused a problem and then done nothing'
James Burdett lives in one of around 2,000 homes in the Sheffield suburb of Stannington which were, sending hundreds of thousands of litres of water flooding into the gas network.
“But as the week went on it became properly cold. We were able to manage by being in one room with two or three electric heaters, but we were far from warm.”To make matters worse, the family were told to conserve their electricity use, which has lapsed for periods, due to concerns that increased demand could overload the network.
Mr Burdett, who works for the council, said: “What I’d like to know is what Yorkshire Water is doing to make sure that pipes don’t burst the gas main again. Speaking to reporters at a press conference in Stannington on Thursday, Yorkshire Water’s director of water, Neil Dewis, said the burst pipe was an asbestos-cement main from 1970.The cause of the burst and how it came to affect the gas network is still under investigation. A spokesperson for Yorkshire Water said that bursts are often “related to a change in temperature or pressure in the pipe”.
