The National Grid will give firms compensation and given cash incentives to take part equivalent to around £10 per customer for each trial day, sources say. Renewable energy sources are often unable to keep up with the extra demand, so carbon-hungry generation plugs the gap. It will run from November to March, meaning up to £100 is available, and will only be available to customers who meet undisclosed ‘criteria’.
OVO claims the average household could achieve meet their target by ‘moving three loads of washing per week from peak time to a greener time of day’.
