NSW police officer Ryan Barlow guilty of assault on teen in Sydney park
A serving NSW Police officer has been found guilty of assaulting an Indigenous teenager after he caused the boy to fall face-first onto the ground while his arms were restrained.
The boy, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was standing four metres away with his arms folded when he told Barlow “I’ll crack you across the f---ing jaw, bro”. The court heard evidence during the earlier hearing that the leg sweep manoeuvre Barlow performed was not a method taught to members of the NSW Police Force as part of their training, but it is also not prohibited.“The question remains for me as to whether the use of force by the accused … was reasonably necessary to make the arrest of the complainant or not,” he said.
Attia said the video footage showed Barlow spinning the boy around twice, in a quick action, and that the boy appeared to slightly lose his balance and “lifted his foot slightly”. Barlow had hold of the boy’s arms while this occurred, he said.
