After a blistering start to season 2023, Collingwood have been felled by the Brisbane Lions, who turned a week of fierce scrutiny on its head, kicking 10 unanswered goals on the way to a convincing 33-point win.
It was a match with many storylines and takeaways. Cam Rayner, No. 1 pick in the 2017 draft, headlined with a career game that’s been a long time coming. Joe Daniher and Eric Hipwood overcame torrid weeks to have an influence. And Charlie Cameron kicked six goals.Nick Daicos was again wonderful for Collingwood, gathering 37 possessions and kicking 2.2 for the Magpies. As the match progressed, he was moved onto the ball and up forward as coach Craig McRae tried to spark his side.
“He was really disappointed with his game last week, there was probably no one more so in the club than himself, so his performance tonight was on the back of his own chastisement of himself.” But Collingwood’s style of play, as daring as it is, is always going to give their opposition a chance. In the second quarter, their pressure dropped, they couldn’t win the same weight of ground balls, and their disorganisation in the ruck began to tell.
More pleasingly for the home side, their tall forwards stood up. There may have been some hearts in mouths when Hipwood passed to Daniher, but Daniher made the snap. Hipwood got to more contests, created opportunities, and kicked a couple himself.That left Collingwood 22 points in arrears, with some questions to answer. They’d been in this position against Geelong in round one, and too many times to mention last year, but this had a different feel.
