Brisbane coach Kevin Walters does not believe Selwyn Cobbo will be granted a return to the State of Origin furnace, as Maroons coach Billy Slater prepares to name his Game III squad.
At the Gabba on Saturday, Cobbo could hardly have issued a more magical reminder to Slater of what he could do on a football field, scoring a match-winning hat-trick as the Broncos conquered the Dolphins 24-16 in the second instalment of the Battle of Brisbane.
But despite his efforts, and his two-try heroics under Slater in the series’ opener, the best thing for Cobbo would be to remain out of the Origin arena, Walters said - particularly as he was still grappling with a hip concern that has hindered his campaign at times. “It’s just a mental thing trying to play through injuries and all that. I’ve come a long way through that and I’ve learnt a lot along the way.”
A clever chip and regather, while somehow keeping his ball carrying arm elevated as he was being tackled, orchestrated his second try for the night before he scored again at the death to keep Brisbane level with the ladder-leading Panthers.
