The suburb of Withington is setting itself apart from other neighbourhoods thanks to a boom in veggie and vegan places to dine
Just over 10 years ago, there seemed to be a lack of life in the South Manchester suburb of Withington . Bumping shoulders with student-centric Fallowfield on one side and posh’n’pricey Didsbury on the other, the commercial centre of the village was a mishmash of charity shops and barbers.
Ice Shack opened in 2016 as a vegetarian ice cream and sweets parlour under a previous owner, but in April 2017 it transitioned to all-vegan. There is a buzz about the community right now, Leah adds - and she thinks that the point of difference for consumers in the area is drawing people in from further afield.
Co-owner Adam Porrino says they have been accepted as a vegetarian spot since day one: "I think people do associate us with being vegetarian. We do still get people who come in and will see ‘English breakfast tea’ on the menu and ask for a full English occasionally., but not too much. "We don’t have a big selection but it’s a good price for what it is. It’s about not excluding anyone who isn't vegetarian."
"I’m not sure if we would thrive as much in any other place. There seems to be such a collective push to move in one direction in Withington. It always feels fresh and there are new things popping up, so it’s really good to be here." Owner Theo Tobias is a vegan and said that he is happy to run a vegetarian cafe, but he is keen to point out that’s not their prime objective as a venue.
