But it did mean one of the longest-standing World Cup records of all was finally broken, with the record for latest calendar World Cup match – set at July 30 by the very first final in 1930, which was matched by the now forgotten 1966 final but never beaten – was obliterated by the very first match of this tournament on November 20.
That now leaves the Oceania Football Confederation as the only one of the six FIFA continental confederations still to produce a men’s World Cup semi-finalist. CONCACAF haven’t had one since the United States finished third at the very first tournament in 1930, with Mexico’s failure to ever get beyond the quarter-finals feeling a bit of an odd one.
