A DECADE of austerity has left young black people as the most likely group filling the least secure and lowest paid jobs, while dealing with many other manifestations of structural racism.research shows that black, Asian and other racialised minorities are twice as likely to be on zero hours contracts, and that figure is higher for young workers from those backgrounds.
The cost of living crisis might well have created the very environment which demands more organising within unions.At the time of writing,the energy regulator Ofgem just announced that the average household annual price cap could top 80%, leaving families paying thousands of pounds more for their energy bills.
“This organisation has been achieved by unions because unions specialise in holding the employer accountable for their members. It is important to be part of the union for this particular reason and there is power in numbers.” And it goes back even further than that. Many communities in the countries colonised by Britain, practised trade unionism in the colonies as a natural way of organising and fighting the exploitation of labor and resources by the occupiers.
She said: “It’s vital in this day and age for young people to be involved in activism as a lot of different issues in society affect us whether it be rates of pay, how we go about our daily lives, discrimination all these factors inside and outside of the workplace in society, housing, we play a role in ensuring we don’t become complacent and joining a trade union is one way we can fight for ourselves.
“Sometimes you can have very precarious contracts and moments where you don’t know where the next bit of money is coming from.
