"It's come to our attention over the past couple of weeks that there have been unfortunate interactions between players, coaches and spectators involving dissent towards umpires," Sunshine Coast Netball Association President Kirsten Boud wrote. "You can't have a game of netball without umpires. While you might not agree with every decision, you've got to be able to respect the umpire's decision," Ms Wood said.UniSC senior research fellow for sport and outdoor recreation Scott McLean said he knew of many clubs that were struggling to retain umpires and referees.

"And also having some talks in the past 12 to 18 months with Basketball Queensland, they're having similar issues with a drop out of referees."Dr McLean said the issue of why umpire and referee abuse was occurring was complex and required more research, but an influencing factor could be a rise in parents and coaches pushing young players to an elite level."There seem to be academies popping up every other week, you know: 'Your child needs to be elite.

Of the 886 respondents across 68 sports, 92 per cent reported having experienced some form of interpersonal violence in community sport as a child.Most experienced psychological violence , and physical violence , and more than a third experienced sexual violence .
