Your rights if your passport has been delayed, and whether you can claim compensation 🔎 Explained by gracegausden93
It is very unlikely an airline or hotel would give you a refund if you can’t travel because of passport delays. For example, some airlines and hotels are likely to let you move your booking to another time if you let them know in advance you can’t make it.
If you also booked a flexible flight or hotel, which allows cancellations, it is likely you will get your money back, as you are in a contract where you can ask for a refund. These tend to be more expensive than those which do not offer this type of flexibility. While it is always worth checking with your insurer when your travel is disrupted or something goes wrong, just in case you can make a claim, unfortunately you are unlikely to get money back if you can’t travel due to a lack of passport.
Brian Brown of financial information business Defaqto said: “From an insurance perspective, if you can’t travel because you don’t have a valid passport then there would be no cover for any kind of insurance claim such as cancellation or delayed travel. “This is an area where the customer really is on their own – the insurers will take the view this is something you should have sorted out yourself before you travelled.”A spokesperson for Her Majesty’s Passport Office said: “The overwhelming majority of applications are completed within the published time frame, with 97.7 per cent of applications being processed within 10 weeks in the first half of this year.
“For the small percentage of customers whose applications take longer than 10 weeks, there is an expedited service at no additional cost to help ensure they receive their passport ahead of their travel.”
