As Autumn de Wilde’s flamboyant new comedy arrives in cinemas, the actress tells Vogue about redefining the period drama, getting a nosebleed on cue and channeling Emma’s “I woke up like this” energy.
We wanted to play with the genres we were hopping between, so when it came to blocking out a scene, Autumn would ask us what we wanted to do. We’d explain our impulses and she’d talk it through with us. We’re a riotous bunch and it can be like herding cats but she’s great at that.”“We had two weeks to rehearse but without locations and costumes, so it was all about getting to know each other. We formed friendships that still haven’t gone away.
“I had lots of fittings and Alex and I became close. It was a wonderful way to get into the character because Emma is the sort of person who finds her light and positions herself next to roses. She’ll think, ‘Aren’t I beautiful? I woke up like this.’ So, one day I was wearing a coat with an exceptional back and I found myself delivering lines over my shoulder so that I could really show it off. The hair was important too. At the start, her curls are tightly wound and everything is meticulous.
“I think the eternal appeal of the book, and of the character, is that Austen’s work was always three dimensional. Everybody either has a bit of Emma in them or knows an Emma. We all have a friend who’s a bit controlling, and you’re like, ‘I love you but I also want to punch you in the face sometimes.’ That sort of youthful hubris will never go out of fashion, because every year a whole new bunch of people turn 18 and suddenly think they’re adults who know what they’re doing.
“Beyond that, Emma also plays into different fantasies: the fantasy of always being able to care for your father, of never having to move out. Even the fantasy of going back in time and kissing the guy who was your best friend. Those themes are just timeless.”From Aleppo To The Oscars: Meet The Syrian Mother Who Made The Most Powerful Film Of The YearAll products featured on the website are independently selected by our Editors.
