A new breed of digital cultural entrepreneurs have doubled their online content to six million in two years in an industry born in people’s living rooms.
Australians are raking in $9 billion a year in profit harnessing digital tools to export social media content to the world.
Fuelled by COVID lockdowns, Australian creators have turned to YouTube, Spotify, TikTok and Instagram as the tools of choice for many creators wanting to export their digital artistic expression to the world. More than a third of Australian content creators aim to build a revenue-generating business.
Other revenue sources include product sales, brand partnerships and live performance engagements. In Australia, male content creators report earning an average of $150 per hour while female content creators report earning $110.on content creators, warning that even making money from conducting make-up tutorials is declarable income. But social media influencers receiving payment in the form of goods such as handbags, jewellery or holidays will be hard to track.
Screen Australia has provided $23 million in financing for online content creators in the past four years and announced funding for seven short film projects produced specifically for digital content platforms in July this year.
