A review of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Early Days Collection, a compilation of classic Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games. The collection offers a glimpse into the early digital adaptations of the popular card game, but lacks some key titles and may not be the best entry point for newcomers.
I have fond memories of playing Yu-Gi-Oh games as a child, though I barely understood the rules. As an adult, I tried to revisit the game but found the complex combo-centric gameplay overwhelming. I enjoyed Yu-Gi-Oh for its simple appeal: playing with Dark Magician, who looked cool, and the big numbers on his card. Modern Yu-Gi-Oh, however, has become much more intricate, exceeding the capabilities of my aging brain.
I yearn for a game that allows me to relive the simpler days of Yu-Gi-Oh, a collection of classic titles from its early years. For fans like me, yearning for a nostalgic trip, Konami and Digital Eclipse have teamed up to release Yu-Gi-Oh! Early Days Collection. This collection spans the early digital adaptations of Yu-Gi-Oh!, emulating a variety of Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games. Remember when Yu-Gi-Oh! was as popular as Pokemon, filling comic shops and middle school lunchrooms? Everyone wanted a Duel Disk and to decipher Yugi Matou's peculiar purple hair spikes. During its peak, Yu-Gi-Oh! spawned numerous digital adaptations, RPGs, and even board games. While not every game in the Early Days Collection is a gem, several standouts have been unavailable for over a decade, with some even making their debut outside of Japan.Eternal Duelist Soul, a straightforward card battle simulator for the GBA, faithfully adapts the rules and lets you duel against AI-controlled characters from the anime. Another intriguing title is Dungeon Dice Monsters, a bizarre board game spinoff incorporating dice pools and a hefty 50-page instruction manual. The collection leans towards quantity over quality, with many games receiving mixed reviews upon release and fairing no better now. Still, it offers a substantial slice of Yu-Gi-Oh! from a simpler era, sure to find its audience. The feature list is solid and standard for Digital Eclipse's other retro compilations. It includes customizable borders, cheats, time rewinding, save states, a digital gallery showcasing classic artwork, and visual screen filters to emulate the CRT aesthetic. Online play is available, but currently limited to Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters 4: Battle of Great Duelists. Digital Eclipse plans to add multiplayer to other titles eventually, but it's disappointing that most games have head-to-head modes, yet only one is playable online. Local multiplayer is also absent in most cases, meaning you'd need a Game Boy to experience classic versus modes as intended. The collection, while robust and well-executed, lacks Yu-Gi-Oh!'s prime era. It omits notable titles like The Duelists of the Roses and home console games. With limited tutorials and outdated mechanics, it's not the best introduction to the card game compared to Duel Links or Master Duel. However, for those seeking a nostalgic trip or a chance to play classic online against friends, the Early Days Collection is worth considering. But for newcomers or those looking for excellent card-battler RPGs, other options might be more suitable.
