On a trip to Zanzibar this winter I reflected on 10 years of solo travel . During that time, I have lived and travelled alone in New York City, Colombia and much of the rest of Latin America. I also enjoyed trips to Vietnam and South Africa before, in 2021, moving to Lisbon, where I set up writing retreats for women of colour. In the same year, I published my solo travel guide.

On TikTok, there are more than 635,000 posts with the hashtag Zanzibar, hundreds of which also include hashtags such as “solo travel”, “solo female travel” and “solo backpacking”. I went to find out if the TikTok videos – featuring sunset cruises, bright blue shores, thatched roof hotels and snorkelling – matched the hype.An archipelago of more than 50 islands, just 22 miles off the coast of Tanzania, Zanzibar is home to 1.9 million people. Zanzibar Island, also known as Unguja, is just 53 miles long and 19 miles wide.on the east of the island at Tui Blue Bahari Zanzibar, a mini-village of 217 rooms, two pools and five restaurants. Beginning with a stroll along Kiwengwa, I was approached by several people selling wooden ornaments, massages and excursions. At sunset that evening, I befriended two South African women who had been looking for someone to take their photo. I joined them for a beachfront dinner, where we enjoyed a performance from local Masai – a semi-Nomadic ethnic group from Tanzania and Kenya. Around us I heard Italians, Germans and a few Britons. Direct flights aren’t yet available from the UK, however – I flew via Dubai.The next day, my plan was to see turtles. Zanzibar has several sanctuaries. It is advisable to review the ethics of these organisations before booking. Tour operatorTiktok had touted Salaam Cave as a serene alternative. I booked a taxi with Mohammed, a guide I had met on the beach, for $50, and arrived at the caves on a Saturday, at 2pm.
