David Mundee Zion Chapel head coach Cody Keene Jr. refers to Mason Stuart as the “consistent piece” for the Rebels' football team’s success the last few years.
After having two of his first three seasons at Zion Chapel interrupted by injuries, the 5-foot-10, 205-pound Stuart had a break-out senior campaign behind a 1,000-1,000 season. He rushed for 1,293 yards with 15 touchdowns and passed for 1,160 yards and 10 TDs. “It felt like home,” Stuart said. “It’s in a small town and a small community. It’s almost like Jack as everybody just about knows everybody. I felt it gave me a great chance to grow academically and in the sports way. I feel like that is where I belong.”
He was especially grateful for having a college opportunity. He wasn’t sure he would have one after a season-ending broken ankle during his junior year. He played in only a jamboree and the first half of the season opener before the injury. After rehab, he returned in the spring and stayed healthy during his senior season.
“I feel like my biggest strength is that I am mobile,” Stuart said. “I can run the ball whenever it is needed. I am tough. I can take a hit.”“He manages things,” Keene said. “He gets guys to go in a certain direction and he pulls people along with him. He is a natural leader.”
