As summer approaches, Brits face ant infestations, with councils conducting over 20,000 treatments annually. A DIY expert reveals lemon juice as an effective, natural repellent that disrupts ant trails and pheromones, offering a cost-effective alternative to professional pest control.
With summer fast approaching, Brits are preparing to make the most of the warm weather. Windows are being flung open, picnic baskets are being filled and ants are marching into our kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms.
The British Pest Control Association reports that local councils nationwide have conducted more than 20,000 ant-related treatments in just one year, demonstrating how common and challenging these infestations can be. When ignored, a handful of ants can rapidly multiply into a colony numbering hundreds, or even thousands, and tackling these infestations can prove costly. Professional pest control services can charge over £165 for an initial appointment, with follow-up treatments setting you back approximately £60 each time, reports the Express.
Fortunately, Glen Peskett, DIY expert at Saxton Blades, reveals there's a quick, affordable and natural solution — and it's probably sitting in your fridge right now. While many homeowners instinctively grab the vinegar when they spot ants invading their property, Glen suggests there's another approach that's equally effective. He said: "Lemon juice is a brilliant natural ant repellent.
"The strong citrus scent disrupts their scent trails, and the acidity interferes with the pheromones they use to navigate. "Just squeeze fresh lemon juice around door frames, windowsills, or anywhere you've seen ants coming in. " This completely natural technique will not only halt ants in their tracks, but also leave your home smelling fresh and pleasant.
If you're eager to try this inexpensive and straightforward technique to tackle ants in your property, here's the method: Slice a fresh lemon and squeeze the juice into a small dish or straight onto a cloth or cotton pad. Apply the juice around identified entry points including cracks, windowsills, doorframes, skirting boards, and beneath sinks. For added potency, combine lemon juice with a splash of water and spray along routes where ants could enter.
