A gardening expert reveals how to properly remove bindweed, a notoriously difficult weed to eradicate, emphasizing the importance of digging up the entire root system to prevent regrowth. The article details the damaging effects of bindweed on garden plants and how it spreads.
Weeds are a common issue faced by gardeners across the country, and with the days getting longer and temperatures rising, they can run rampant. Although most weeds can be aesthetically unappealing, there’s a particular type of weed that can be a detriment to your other plants.
Bindweed can be notoriously difficult to get rid of, and if it’s not removed properly, it can keep growing back time and time again. Gardening expert and TikTok creator Ish recently shared the best method for removing bindweed, and it’s best to get ahead of the problem now. Ish said: “If you have problems with bindweed in your garden; you’ve always wondered why it keeps coming back?
Well, here’s the root of it, and as you can see, it just keeps going and going and going and going and going. ” If you’re unfamiliar with bindweed, it can be identified by its incredibly long twining stem and large white trumpet-shaped flowers. It can grow to form a large mass of foliage, choking garden plants, reducing their growth or killing smaller plants entirely.
Bindweed’s extensive roots make it difficult to remove, and if you don’t remove all of the weed, it will keep coming back. You probably won’t even realise just how long the root is underground. The Royal Horticultural Society explained that bindweed will compete with other plants for moisture, nutrients, space and light. If the bindweed isn’t removed, the weed’s stem can smother other plants thanks to their deep, extensive roots, which makes them particularly tricky to get rid of.
Bindweed can spread throughout gardens when new plants or soil containing root fragments are introduced. Once bindweed fragments are introduced to soil, the roots can spread quickly. They can also be spread through composting the roots or accidentally chopping them when digging the plants up. To ensure that bindweed doesn’t grow back, Ish explained that gardeners should dig up the whole root, leaving nothing behind.
Ish continued: “But if you leave even just that bit there, that will grow into a whole new bindweed again and again. So the best thing you can do to prevent it from growing is actually overplant over it.
“So restrict the light, so when some of these small shoots come out, they’re not being fed by the light, they’ve only got what the roots are giving them. So by repeatedly digging them up and taking them away, starving them of that light, effectively, you will help get rid of it.
” The RHS also recommended deadheading the plants before it has a chance to produce seeds; fork out any seeds, which most likely appear in spring and autumn; or lift the border plants, clear the ground and replant. If you end up using a weed killer, Ish previously advised using a natural-based solution, which is made up of water, salt and white vinegar. This will help to dehydrate the plant substantially, but will not kill off the root.
There may be some natural weed killers that kill the root, but you should look out for weed killers that break down microorganisms in the ground.
