A male thresher shark was found dead on a beach in Cornwall, likely due to sport fishing. The incident highlights the dangers of bycatch for sharks and other marine life.

A male thresher shark , 4.25m (13.9ft), was found dead on Par beach on January 1st. The Cornwall Wildlife Trust reported the discovery to its marine stranding programme. The trust said there was damage to the animal's mouth and signs of hemorrhaging, likely occurring before death. Marine Conservation Officer Matt Slater stated that while it was difficult to confirm, early findings suggest the shark's death may have resulted from line-caught sport fishing .

He emphasized that bycatch, the accidental entanglement of marine animals in fishing gear, poses a significant risk to sharks and other ocean wildlife. The shark was sent for a post-mortem examination by the Cornwall Marine Pathology Team. The thresher shark, an endangered species in European waters according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red list, was moved by volunteers and community members. Cornwall Wildlife Trust urged those involved in commercial or recreational fishing to follow guidelines for the safe handling and release of accidentally caught animals. They also advised the public to contact the trust's marine stranding hotline (0345 201 2626) if they find dead animals stranded on Cornwall beaches. Devon Wildlife Trust reported an increase in thresher shark sightings and strandings in the South West in recent years, attributing it to warming waters caused by climate change
