Global LNG imports are rising, driven by strong demand in Europe which is drawing cargoes away from a tepid Asian market.
Global LNG imports are on track to jump this month to the highest volume since January 2024 amid stronger demand in Europe that is drawing cargoes away from Asia , where demand remains tepid and gas inventories high. LNG imports worldwide are set to rise to 38.12 million metric tons in January 2025, up from 37.69 million tons imported in December, per data compiled by commodity analysts Kpler and reported by Reuters columnist Clyde Russell.
This winter season, Europe has been drawing a lot of spot LNG cargoes away from Asia as European prices are higher than those in northeast Asia and Europe scrambles for supply with a colder winter, fast-depleting gas levels in storage, and the end of the Russian gas transit via Ukraine. Traders are following the price signals and with higher European prices, they are diverting cargoes to Europe instead of trying to sell in Asia.
