Leeds United are expressing their disappointment with homophobic chanting heard during a match, with the club pushing for Savile chants, which have no club connection, to be classed as a hate crime.
The club, which pre-match had urged spectators against singing such songs and had set up extra cameras in the stands, has acknowledged the reports that homophobic chants were heard during the game and have moved to take action.
The Football Association can fine clubs for such chanting and Leeds were told to pay £150,000 in August 2023 when homophobic chants were sung during a Premier League home match against Brighton in the prior March.to conduct a full review of stewarding and an evaluation of their CCTV coverage. The club has now expressed its disappointment with the chants that were heard at the weekend.
In a statement, Leeds United said: “Leeds United Football Club are aware of homophobic chanting which took place during Sunday’s Premier League fixture with Brighton & Hove Albion at Elland Road.
“As was communicated before the fixture, any form of discriminatory chanting has no place in football. For this match, extra cameras were deployed in stands and anyone identified in taking part in homophobic chanting will face a lengthy stadium ban.
“The club are also aware of disappointing Jimmy Savile chants, however, this does not make other forms of discriminatory and homophobic chanting acceptable. ” Leeds are pushing for chants of the paedophile Savile, who had no connection to the club, to be classed as a hate crime under tragedy chanting.
