Lidl and Other Retailers Announce Christmas and New Year Closures

Lidl, along with other retailers such as Aldi and Home Bargains, will close the majority of their UK stores for three days over Christmas and New Year to allow employees an extended break and time with family and friends. Specific closure dates vary slightly depending on the store location.

Lidl has confirmed that the majority of its UK stores will shut for three days over the coming weeks. The budget supermarket chain has announced it wants to give employees an extended break, with all 980 branches closing on Christmas Day, December 25.

The majority of stores will also remain closed on Boxing Day, December 26, and New Year's Day, January 1. All Lidl outlets outside the M25 will be shut on New Year's Day, while most branches outside London and Wales will close on Boxing Day. Shoppers can check specific store opening hours through Lidl's online store locator or via the Lidl Plus app. Lidl is among an increasing number of retailers offering workers three days off. Aldi has revealed that all its UK outlets will be closed for three days during the festive season. The supermarket chain has confirmed it will close on Christmas Day and won't reopen until Saturday, December 27, enabling employees 'the chance to spend time with friends and family'. Aldi branches will also shut on New Year's Day, reopening on Friday, January 2, 2026. Meanwhile, Home Bargains will close on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year's Day. Announcing the news earlier this year, a spokesperson for Home Bargains said: 'Our colleagues work incredibly hard throughout the year, and we want to recognise that commitment. 'As a family-run business, we understand the importance of spending time with family and friends, particularly over the holidays. We're proud to give our teams additional time off to enjoy the festive season.'
