Tesco has relaunched its Clubcard Challenges rewards scheme, but shoppers are expressing dissatisfaction over the personalized nature of the challenges and the exclusivity of the program. Some users complain that offered products don't align with their usual purchases, while others lament the difficulty in achieving the maximum reward points.
Tesco has brought back its popular Clubcard Challenges rewards scheme this month, but not all shoppers are happy about it. The promotion, which was first launched in August last year, gives customers spending challenges they can choose to complete to win Clubcard points.
The challenges are available for certain shoppers to take part in from now until Sunday, March 9. Tesco shoppers can win up to 5,000 points, which equates to £50 to spend, by taking part in the challenges. But to earn the top amount you must complete all ten challenges you are set. Or, if shoppers complete the challenges but don’t need the points for shopping, then can redeem up to £100 worth of vouchers from one of Tesco’s partners such as Cineworld, Pizza Express and Thorpe Park. Outside of the Clubcard Challenge, during a regular shop, £1 awards you with one Clubcard point, and 100 of these add up £1 worth of Tesco vouchers. Tesco claims Clubcard Challenges are personalised, based on a shopper’s buying habits, but some shoppers are complaining on social media that their offers haven't been tailored to them. On top of that, not all members have been invited to join the Clubcard Challenges scheme, leaving some some shoppers left out entirely. Some shoppers took to X, formerly Twitter, to say that they can't see Clubcard Challenges on their app. @evans81uk wrote on X: @Tesco Are the latest round of Clubcard Challenges only available to certain customers? I only ask as my partner has them on her app and I don’t? Not even had an email about them this time! ". Tesco responded: "Hi there Rachel. That is correct. As the latest round of challenges clash with the end of the previous one, it is only for invited customers that are able to take part. Many thanks, Kevin - Customer Care". Elsewhere on X, people are complaining about the scheme. Some shoppers have said the challenges set are too difficult to complete as they don't need to buy the products that have been suggested. Others have said their Clubcard Challenges are for brands that they have never shown an interest in. @juliebird40 said: "@tesco Clubcard challenges unknown products and who buys more than 10 loaves of bread every week to get the rewards. £50 worth of points won’t be collected by anyone, I’ll be lucky if I collect 50p worth of points and I’m a loyal customer buying 90%+ of my groceries from you." @allroundwonder wrote: "@Tesco if my latest Clubcard challenges are 'tailored to me' how come 99% of them are for products or brands I’ve never purchased . Do better." Another unhappy shopper @NickHawthorne15 complained: "@Tesco hello, you have sent me a clubcard challenges email which you state is tailored for me based on products I buy and yet it contains entirely products I have never ever, in 20 years, bought and never would?? What's going on? Previously I chose from things I buy?" @HeatherMenzies4 said: "@Tesco Clubcard Challenges are disappointing. Haven’t heard of some of the brands, never mind buying them. Out of 20 selections, only 2 are from what I have bought before. I need to spend £32 on bread in 4 weeks to get the first set of points. What is going on??". On Reddit, one user started a thread complaining that is is "impossible" to hit £50 and that the rewards are not tailored to him. JamesTiberious said: "New clubcard challenge just dropped into my email. Quite surprised because they excluded me from my the last one in January . "Immediately though I noticed a problem. They haven't given me any way to max out total points to 5000. The best I can do is around 3500 . The worst combo is around 1870 points. "I feel like they’ve offered me some of the wrong product brands. Odd there’s no finest range, ready meals or meat challenges, they usually form the bulk of the challenge points." Other Tesco shoppers have responded to the thread agreeing with JamesTiberious. One user said: "Sounds exactly the same as mine. I only got the Challenges for the first time over Xmas & hit a few of them because it was all stuff I buy anyway. This time there’s nothing I buy except Hovis & I need to buy about 20 loaves to get any extra points. I live alone!" Another Reddit user replied: "Likewise got a bunch of brands never bought ever. Like heck sausages, Yeo valley, Cornish sea salt?, ciro, vita Coco products. Awful." And another commented: "I got given a load of brands I never buy. Usually get a good bunch of ones I buy all of the time but not this time, so guess I won't bother".However the supermarket said last week following the announcement of the new scheme: “We are constantly looking for ways to make Clubcard work harder for our customers. And with Clubcard Prices on thousands of products, it is already saving customers up to £385 on the annual cost of their groceries. “We are currently offering Your Clubcard Prices to a trial group of our Clubcard members, giving them offers on products they regularly buy at Tesco, in addition to the thousands of Clubcard Prices available to all Clubcard members each week.”
